DIY: Removing Tail lights and Rear bar.
I decided to take the rear bar and tail lights out of Maverick today and thought i would do a quick DIY on how to take off the the rear bar as the last time i recall a few people were wondering on what's involved.
OK - so this should take you about 20min and you will need the following tools (shown in fig.1)
- Ratchet with 10mm socket (highly desirable, preferrably a flexible head 1/4 drive)
- Extension bar (desirable, preferrably 15mm)
- Phillips head screwdriver
- 10mm Spanner if you dont have a ratchet
First start with taking out your boot lining and trays either side of the boot. They come out with a single bolt from memory (possibly a 12mm i cannot remember i had already taken them out beforehand and had a stripped boot at this stage)
Now, take out the tail lights - undo the 4 bolts (found below), then unplug them. They come out very easily so don't force them, just push the button down and remove the plug.
Now push on the thread left behind from undoing the 4 bolts and the tail light should push out into your hand. Gently grab the wire from the outside of the tail light where it goes through the boot, and gently pull on the suction cup thing holding it to the boot, it should pull out relatively easy and thread the plug through the hole thats left and you should have a full tail light in your hand to put aside. Next, undo the 3 screws found below. When they are all out, gently put your hand behind the panel and gently 'pop' the little black plug left behind into your hand - they should pop out very easily, so do not put any stress on the bar. Next, undo the 2 bolts found under the wheel arch (below) This is where the extension bar and flexible ratchet head come in handy. There is one at the bottom and one at the top which the arrow is pointing to. (couldnt get a good picture with both of them in it) Now, undo the 2 screws either side of the boot on the side wall (below) and the two screws that are under both tail lights by themselves (2nd below) - shown in red. Lastly, undo the 4 bolts either side of the wheel well (below) to unbolt the rear rheo bar. If you have done all of the above steps, then the rear bar should slide out the back.
Your car will look like the pic below but a little more dirty as i cleaned mine up before taking the pic Depending on why you are taking it off - you will need to remove the rheo and 2 support bars from the rear bar and switch them over to the new bar.
There are 6 bolts holding in the support bars (below) you will need to take out, and 4 bolts holding in the rheo to the bar found underneath. Hope this DIY was helpful and look forward to writing a few in the future! (cheers Vectose )

Nice write up
To place photos between text you just put the cursor where you want the photo to be and just below the text box where it says "Attachments" choose which photo you want and press "Place inline".

Very nice!
Would have been very handy to know this before I embarked on such a venture on my own, only to throw my wrench at the fence!
I shall attempt this again now...

What is this "bar" everyone speaks of?? Every rear bumper removal guide I have read was all about removing the "rear bar" as the purpose and the bumper removal guide was just along for the ride.
Are you guys talking about the rear crash bar? What are you guys replacing it with?
