One for you schumie
In case you've not seen the news...
Coordinated police raids on a number of Sydney dealerships two days ago have resulted in one dealership, "Dream Car City", having its trading immediately suspended.
Prestige Auto Centre, Edward Lees Imports and Master Cars at Blacktown were also raided.
Those three businesses are accused of digitally altering odometers on at least 100 vehicles imported from Japan and will have to show Fair Trading NSW why they should not be disciplined.
Fair Trading NSW have been investigating the dealers for two years, following a tip-off from a consumer who was concerned about their vehicle’s wear and tear, and information from police.
A number of people are expected to be prosecuted by NSW Police and Fair Trading NSW in connection with the ongoing investigation.
Fines up to $20,000 are in place for odometer tampering, while those who knowingly sell or attempt to sell a tampered vehicle face up to 10 years jail.

Saw this! I thought Edward Lees went bust anyway. Or did someone just take over the business?

Re: One for you schumie
I think the crime itself is petty compared to the punishment.
There are far worse things people are getting away with, and yet winding back the odometer on a car faces you 10 years....
I'm not at all saying I condone it, I guarantee there is 100,000k more on the clock of ours, but never the less. People have walked away with far less punishment for far worse crimes in this country.
What a joke.

But in all honesty, people that do that deserve to be punished..... they're putting people at risk by tampering...

I agree with Dan. Although I guess it is some form of fraud etc. Having said that, KMs on a car don't mean anything.
I fix cars.

I would more say K's on a maintained car.. 100,000ks extra on a car not maintained means a lot..Daniel2019 wrote:I agree with Dan. Although I guess it is some form of fraud etc. Having said that, KMs on a car don't mean anything.
But point of it is, the K's are altered to fetch a higher price, not trying to make the car appear safe by travelling less distance though. I also believe cars are there to be driven, so never really factor in the total amount .. Just how it has been treated..
I just had to add it ......

Not having a go at you, but this is an argument used which is false.Mad_FTO95 wrote:But in all honesty, people that do that deserve to be punished..... they're putting people at risk by tampering...
Honestly, not really any danger.
Much like any used car that people buy, be it a dealer or private sale. the car could have genuine kilometers of 90,000k on the clock.
If there is zero maintenance done to the thing, then regardless of what the kilometers say, it's due care of the purchaser to do all required maintenance to ensure it's safe to drive.
Standard maintenance, irregardless of kilometers is overlooked all the time, and the only difference between let's say a car will less kilometers, simply means it hasn't been driven as far, but age still matters.
Rubber still fatigues, seals still perish and brake pads still wear.
Things like timing belts, etc should be checked regardless, if a car is 10 years old, and has not done the required 100,000k for a timing belt that most people rely on, then that car is due simply as an age factor of 5 years.
Winding back an odometer is simply a ploy to score more money due to myth that lower k's are better.
The seller has profited by gaining a few perhaps thousand from a few 10s of thousands less on an odometer. That's all.
I can't agree at all that safety is a factor, and I know that this will be their main cause of argument simply due to people who don't know how mechanicals work and again, myth of less k's is better.
And that's my long winded rebuttal.

Irregardless is not a word.
And yeah, we have some cars in at work that have 50,000km on them and theyre fucked. I have seen cars that are almost flawless at 200k+.
We have new cars come in that are infinitely more fucked up than old mate who brings in his 20 year old 323 in that he maintains meticulously and washes every other week.
Also, high KMs could also mean engine rebuilds, replaced parts, blah blah blah compared to a car with 300k on the original motor that needs rings.. lol.

Irrespective/regardless of whether it is in the dictionary or not, it isn't a real word.

It depends on your definition of real. You could use it, but there's no point when you convey the same meaning with a more proper word.Supplanter wrote:Irrespective/regardless of whether it is in the dictionary or not, it isn't a real word.
