hey guys, i got a Panasonic NV-GS15 digital video camera and i'm a little lost at how to import the movies captured in the DV tape into my HDD..
the video camera came bundled with DV Studio and Arcsoft Software Suite, but these sh*t only captures still pictures from the video... i spent the last friggin 2 hrs trying to work this sh*t out only to find that the software that came bundled with it does not import VIDEO files into my HDD... i'm like WTF atm
so what programs do i need to import the movies from my DV tape (in the digital video camera) into my HDD? does this mean I will need a video capture card as well???

simple solution
need-
Firewire/DV Input into computer and Firewire cable(4 pin to 6 pin)
then open any editing software, Windows Movie Maker(free with XP) will do...
press capture, then ok and it captures
USB streaming is the most ANNOYING feature which usually results in frustration(and most cameras dont allow it anyway, wether your panasonic does, i cant remember, i sell em, i dont memorise em )
Im currently doin my friends wedding my my Sony trv22 mini dv camera and its such a simple task to capture once you have a firewire connection..
You can't stream with USB, because it’s not P2P. hehehe SilentBob you only posted the easy part.
I can imagine mikey pulling his hair now, as he don't have enough hard drive space, or the patient for compression/conversion hahaahaha

some video cameras do do usb streaming from the tape, but they down convert the video quality in camera(similar to when uses as a web camera which some also allow)
i ditest the feature, and always tell customers to utilise the firewire connection...
though hdd space is something youll need...around 12gig/hr just for dumping, then space for compressing/editing...
though if you have a beefy cpu you could compress to mpeg direct...saving some space
Hmmmm are you sure is video camera or digital camera? I've never came across a video camera actually use USB for streaming RAW data. I've only seen digial camera that record in mpeg4 or avi use USB, as it wouldn't make sense to me if you try to download RAW data with 12-14mbps, you would just sit there for the whole day to transfer one hr of RAW data.
Also webcam use mpeg, which are already compressed RAW data, & lots of webcam use USB2.0 these days, which had the transfer rate of 400-480mbps, which similar transfer rate of IEEE1394a (firewire ver1.1 400mbps). But what i found is that USB2.0 isn't as stable as Firewire 1.1

Normally you would compress it as you capture from the dv camera.
I have video in on my computer so I just use that to capture from the device and compress in real time with sound being compressed into mp3 also.

yeah, many of the new panasonics do it, sonys do it also(i unfortunatly have to know this stuff as its how i make my living, that and b*llsh*tting about the bits i dont know or cant remember...thats where the true art lies )
they essentially down convert the video quality, in camera, to be capable of streaming across usb 1(and in the new cameras usb 2, so not down converted)
but as i said previously, an annoying feature which is all to often buggy...
Cool man, thanks for the info, now i know heheee so what compression they run on? Man can u imagine the poor guy try to download the footage.
