fan belt ??
hmm, about a week ago my mivec stopped working. then yesterday i happened to have made a u turn and bang mivec kicked in.
i pulled over, did another u turn and bang again it hit mivec hmm. only the second time i discovered it wasnt the u turn but the way i applied the accelerator exiting the u turn.
if i floor it, it locks off at 5600rpm or so, but if i apply enough peddle so as that the auto box responds by changing gear at appropriate rpm point... lets say 6500 or 7000, say an inch from full throttle, it will go into mivec.
of course once im in mivec i can floor it and all is fine. i thought this strange, so i found an open empty road that was quiet so i could hear the engine properly. the technique worked but at about 7000rpm, i heard and felt a scratching under the bonnet, like a belt had snapped.
I immediatly checked and saw that it had been the fan belt, (that is the large, nearest one on the left, right LOL) it was on the right edge of the track and a cm or so that had past over had been fraid. needless to say i drove home slowly and parked the bugger. obviously i need the belt changed and adjusted but could a either... un-aligned belt, loose belt or tight belt have been the reason mivec suddenly stopped. ???
Or did i just happen to stuff my belt by coincidence and when its fixed ill find mivec is still playing up.???
any help or ideas would be much appreciated before i do anything. cheers.

i'm quite sceptical of the FTO's belts...
about a week after i bought mine, both the altenator and power steering/air con belts shredded and came off. I was revving it in neutral and giving it a bit, but any car shouldnt have a problem when revving in neutral.......
as for the MIVEC, i'm no expert, but i dont see how a loose/partly ripped belt would affect it....

the fanbelt should in no way effect the mivec, mivec sensors do die... they are bastards of things!.. best bet would be to run a diagnosis... or you could have fun and take the cam box off.... but that probably wont tell you jack... if its intermittant, id check the wiring to the cambox and maybe the fuse....
as for mitsi belts being dodgy.... are you insane? the belt is only as good as the idiot who puts it on... tighten it to the right tension and you should be fine.
Mike.
