Drops into THIRD (3rd) and need to restart engine

Hi Guys,

Have a major issue with my FTO GPX AUTO at the moment,

While driving along, at any speed, every now an then, for no reasion, mainly when im nor accelerating, it will just drop itself into THIRD from drive, won't kick up or down, even using the sports mode shift wont move it, the only way to get it to change gears is to pull over, turn the car of and then restart the engine. This resets the fault.

Took it to an auto trans guy with the right gear, he plugged in the laptop and diagnostics while it was in ths "SAFE MODE" i think he called it, and he couldn't register a problem with the auto-trans, said its probably an electrical fault thats intermittent and a bitch to find.

Has anyone ever had this problem and had it resolved.....really looking for ideas here as it's kinda nerver racking when it happens.

Safe mode means its protecting itself from further damage - usually due to a component failing. First move would be to check the gbox ECU codes. The most common failure is input or output speed sensors on the box & the code check will tell you this.

i'm pretty sure the laptop was hooked up to the wherever it was and he said that the gearbox was behaving as it was supposed too, and no error codes were showing, will ask the guy round the road at work if he can check those sensors you mentioned
