Well today, on the way home from work, it was playing up, so, as soon as I got home I checked the coils. All were around the 35-40 mark (a little high, but not too bad) except one, which was reading about 600k. By the time I managed to pull it out of the car, it was back to around 35 ohms again. So, looks like it might be stuffed. Good enough evidence for me to look for a new one anyway. Thanx Payaya.
EDIT: Took stepper motor to work, and put meter across sus coil. Hit it wih a heat gun, and watched the resistance slowly climb from 28ohms to about 38ohms, then jumped to around 1 Meg. The other coils stayed at around the 30ohm mark. So, now where to source a new one. Does anyone know what kind (other than genuine FTO) will fit ? The one on my Pajero is a little different (at least the plug is), but the one on a mates Magna looks Very similar.

Done some ringing around, and cant seem to find any second hand or recon'd stepper motors for and FTO in Adelaide. The ppl Ive talked to say I cant use a different sort, but I'd believe you guys over them... so,
Can anyone tell me what cars use the same type of stepper motor, so I can ask for one of them instead. Might have better luck that way. I notice my Pajero has a stepper motor, but the plug is different for starters. Is there a particular model of Magna or Lancer etc that is the same ?

Yeah, I found them. I am strapped for cash atm though, so looking for cheapest option.
I found a stepper motor out of a Magna at a wreckers, that was ALMOST identical. The only difference was the centre bit was a different length. Since it was the coils that were stuffed, I managed to change bits over to make it the same. I have put it in the car, and seems to work fine (not stalling) but the overall idle is a little low, but when the thermo's or aircon cut in the revs pick up accordingly. So it might just be a case of adjusting the SAS to match the new stepper.
Only time will tell I guess, as it was an intermittent fault to start with, so here's hoping. And all for under $100.

I day for some reason I tested the coils when hot and exact thing happened as you described!
Glad to be of assistance.

i have similar problem... but have replaced my stepper motor with a new one...but i have 2 issues and atm it sounds like the TPS...
symptom 1: when i cold start the car....it wouldnt start probably....as in its like struggling and choking to ignite and than it idles very high around 2000rpm before settles to 1000rpm after 2 mins.... whats the cause of that??
symptom 2: the idles bounce around..have search the topic....and still wonder how to adjust the TPS since i am not electrical minded ...eg thickness gauge??
any help with will be great..thanks....

Well, the new stepper motor (Old Magna one actually) seems to have worked ok for me, but as for your problem wjhe, Im not sure. Im no mechanic either, but I seem to recall reading about idle "hunting" in the workshop manual. Have you had a look at that ? There is a download link on the forum if you dont already have them
