just installed new engine..car slow & poor fuel economy

hey there fellow fto luverz,

I've just installed a new engine and it is very slow at 1st & 2nd gear and sumtimez unable to rev anymore than 4500rpm....generally low at all gears...but everyday i drive it, the car seems to get better with time

When i start the car most of the time, smoke comes out smelling like burnt oil & some rattly noise can be heard in the engine bay...the car is very loud and did i mention very slow...sounds and feels like a mack truck driving in a school zone !!!!

My bro-inlaw has told me that this is normal for engines that havent started for a few months with no oil in it.... is this true ???

This will be my first whole week driving the car with the new engine and already ive spent my usual 2 weeks worth of petrol driving the car into just 3 days..... very bad fuel economy...

Could this be also the fact that the air-fuel ratio have to adjust properly by itself, the engine oil to settle properly and the computer relearning ????

Any suggestions ???

usually ECU has to reprogram itself and engine lube itself up and that.. but its not usually as bad as u make it sound.. maybe the mechanic got something bad in the engine while he was installing it like water or something

takes the fto ecu about a tank of driving to learn to reprogram itself to how you drive... but it shouldnt be as bad as you describe it...? the bad fuel economy is part of the ecu adjusting to the fuel

u got an issue mate...I doubt its just the ECU....what type of FTO have u got? maybe the AFM is doing wierd stuff if u have a GR. Check all the basics like the intakes, TB etc...check the codes, for info you might wanna try this:

that could mean u running 5 cylinder....... -.-

dyno tune.....or let another mechanic guy to have a look at it...

please let us know....or i really want to konw.....

you would notice a miss on 5 cylinders though. If its just a lack of power, then it could be a sensor, say the oxy sensor. It would be a head gasket leak. Blocked cat everything!

yeah agree,,,need more info.

its either electrical or mechanical. if its electrical id say its most likely the plugs which connect the fuel lines and the sparkies rather than the ecu but thats a very wild guess

so id say mechanical... if theres a knocking sound it could be a dropped intake valve. it wont be a head gasket if you can still drive the thing after a week.

get a mechanic to check it on a diagnostic machine or if your feeling brave do it yourself.

this be why im the only one who touches my engine bay... dont trust cowboys.

Damn car is driving heaps better...just need 2 drive it more in the motorway, give it about another week and should all be sweet....

Just played around with the accelerator cable and that fixed most of the stalling that occured when i drop it onto neutral from high revs....still smoking a fair bit though !

And it seems that the mechanic that did the timing belt didnt do it properly(off by 3degrees) thus giving me less power, response and more headache to redo it again !!

Oh n its a mivec engine btw !!!

thatll be it, your timing would be out, as i said youd be lucky not to have put a valve into a piston, or at the very worst bent one.

the belt is a bastard to get on but any experianced mechanic should have no problem

what happen with me is :

when idle 1 cylinder dont work...
when running 6 cylinder started working together at some point...


so it could be that ..
