As Phil said, if you are in Central Coast I could come around to your place and have a look at it for you/adjust tappets if that is the actual cause.

Well, tell ya what, that'd be awesome. Be more than happy to pay you for your troubles Vectose. Hell, I'd happily shoot some dough your way just for the peace of mind.

Not so much really, I'm about an hour north of Sydney!

Well... the mechanic told me it's was blown, scrap, goneskies, but... during the conversation, one of the guys in the workshop said he'd like it as a project car and let him know if I want to sell it, because he'd buy it.

Not a difficult scam to concoct at all... and honest people tend to misjudge how easy it is to collaborate and... *shudders* tell a fib lol.

Its a complete and utter garbage diagnosis tbh.
Tappet noise in a mitsubishi isnt as uncommon as you think (not just in the FTO) and for him to not even know what tappets sound like let alone diagnose bearings over everything else?

Does the car still run fine? How long has it been tapping?

Well... to be fair, it's a pretty horrible sound. Like, it's clear something's gone horribly wrong. My main concern is that he made that diagnosis based solely on the fact that he flushed the engine and it didn't help.

I'm not particulary mechanically minded, I'm a software dev, and well... seems half-hearted if not (lol) criminally negligible not to investigate further than that.

Yeah, still starts and runs perfectly, as per usual... just... pretty noisy. Started last week, it's probably done about 50km's since it started.

EDIT with itty bitty camoflouge button (i can see myself using that somewhat regularly, ta! ;)

Did the sound appear instantly or was the tapping quieter before and has now gotten louder?

If it was a crank bearing bashing up against some metal, i dont think the car would be running fine if at all.
seriously to come to that conclusion after just flushing some fluids is complete bullshit.
(all assuming this is in fact tappets)

Instantly I'm afraid. As in, drove it up a smewhat nasty dirt track up the side of a mountain to bury a pet of mine, and.. well, the next time I drove it, TUK-TUK-TUK-TUK-TUK-TUK

Seeing as it was instant, if it jumps with RPM, my guess is either that sadly it is rooted..

Or.. a rock or some sh*t may have got caught up around a pulley or something and buggered the pulley up. My old FTO had a clicking pulley like that. I guess let Vectose have a look before you do anything. Or post up a video if possible :D

Dont go buying a new engine just yet.

It could still be tappets, could be that one of the plastic collets has broken off a tappet and is now out of spec. So yeah, I can adjust them for you and see if that fixes the problem.

A shot bearing would also be more of a knock and car wouldn't be running fine.

Well, if he/she would like to, I'd be more than willing to cover costs.

That's an interesting idea... I was trying to think of a way a bumpy trip could foul up the internals of an engine but... I dunno too much about these things ya know? My thought was "maybe it's just a coincidence, it is nearly 20 years old after all". But yeah... I mean, on the rare occasion I had to cheap out and put cheap petty in, it would make a noise similar to that, but.. like.. softly. This I think, could fairly be described as a knock :(

Who knows. Are you able to get a video of it up at all?

If its still performing fine then my guess is an accessory/alternator pulley being stuffed up by having a rock go through it. Although without getting your hopes up, its hard to tell without hearing it.

Vectose (Roberta :troll:) will be able to diagnose.
