Sorry, not the best at directing people, more so doing it myself.
Can't easily guide without being there to show...
I'm sure someone will soon enough however.

No worries at all mate, I can't really do much with it in the shop anyway without... well... it'd look pretty odd me mucking around with it with a real mechanic there anyhow

And Vectose said he could probably take a look at it if the video sounds like it might be something other than "blown"

Apart from the obvious sound, it appears to be running perfectly fine, so wouldn't say the engine is blown.
Something simple just making a god awful noise.

yeah well it could be that :/
its just a black cover casing that is bolted onto one side of the engine. just gotta remove a few small bolts and it'll slip off.
i had a little piece of metal fling up and imbed itself into the plastic over time, and was sticking out just enough to hit one of the pulleys, made the same noise for a year before i found it in my old Suzuki

Sounds just like Vectoses' single tappet noise but just a bit louder.

Nah, this sounds more like a solid knock and lot louder.

I don't hear a knock, just a lot of ambient noise like a worn bearing or something.
Reminds me of the bag of bolts alternators in the MR2s or the water pumps on SR20s.
Could be wrong.

Must be the speaker on my phone then. Will have a listen to it on the computer when I get home.

Just had a listen on the computer and I agree with you Dan.

Well I can hear a loud tick/knock maybe even a double knock.
....and it changes speeds with engine revs, up to a constant/continuous tick sound in high revs and then back to a tick in low revs.

Assessing by ear from video is like assessing by a quick glance.
On a thought I'd suggest having a mobile mechanic take a look. He will be 100% unbiased as he can't do the work of changing an engine.
It's possible your mech is spot on, simply circumstance has drawn conclusion of dodginess.
I can't hear anything bad, however I also can't hear all tones.

All we can say is that there is definitely a tap to it, but we can't determine where it's coming from over the internet.

The sound is pretty damn nasty, and yeah, was always gonna be longshot as to whether a phone recording would be able to show something clear, not to worry
I'll have a chat to the mechanic about him investigating the something caught in the pulley's theory, he probably won't mind taking a look
And yeah, it could just be circumstance. I mean, I wouldn't have questioned their integrity if they hadn't offered to buy the thing. I mean.. he wanted it as a project car, but why would you offer to buy a car that you'd have to buy an engine for, unless you knew you could fix that engine yourself and for cheaps? You could pick up a working GPX for a couple grand :/
Hm, might see what the offer is, probably go a long way to showing how cheaply he thinks he can fix it *grins*
