Steering or Suspension problem?

Post by benm7 »

Hey guys,

Having problems with my steering and/or suspension...

My car seems to be handling like an absolute dog. It is understeering, making cracking noises when stop starting, reversing on full lock etc. Took it to East Coast Suspension who did a quick once over and couldnt see anything wrong with the suspension bushes, droplinks etc. Said there was poor dampening and shocks prob need replacing but I cant see how this would cause the cracking etc.

I have now also noticed that the steering changes centre, and will pull to the left one day but to the right another day. steering also feels loose, and the wheel will pull to the left by itself even when on a flat (the whole steering wheel!). Also noticed that when braking, if I go over ripples and bumps in the road it will pull the wheel left and right and actually makes it difficult to control. Also can feel movement coming from the footwell when it cracks and takes off...

Anyone got any ideas? I am going to take it back to East Coast for a full look over but wouldnt mind some advice from the FTO experts :) It honestly feels dangerous to drive and I dont want to put myself into a pole any time soon...

Cheers,
Ben

Have you check the steering rack if it's leaking oil?
The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

Steering rack

Yep, I would be checking the steering rack first and the other to check are the strut tops as the bearings sometimes die. If one of those is in the process of collapsing it will cause your creaking noise (or at least it did for me)
