What belt is missing?

Post by AJ »

So I was driving along tonight and I hear a horrible noise from the engine, then the power steering goes, the battery light comes on and the dash lights dim. I have to keep driving for less than 1km as I'm following a mate to their place. Lots of strange sound coming from the engine, which suddenly stopped after a little bit. When I park up, a belt is missing and some wires are hanging down underneath and oil is coming out of the sump (it may have been doing that for a while though). Here are the pics. Can you help please? Whats the damage? :(

Underneath first.

There are 2 belts, 1 for power steering & air con, 1 for alternator. I cant see any remnants of either. They are 20 odd bucks a pop for replacements, but my main concern is the wiring to the crank angles sensor that has been ripped. We need to check whether the sensor itself is ok.

The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the world's problem.

We think it's the Air con/power steering belt and the alternator belt. I've bought one and had to order the other. Possible the cranik sensor has been pulled out but won't know that until the belts are back on. I hope to do this on Tuesday night.

So that was a sh*t of a job. I was up until after midnight last night (although I started after 9pm). I had lost the power stearing/air con belt and the alternator belt. I dunno if you've tried this before but you have to undo one of the pulls two get the power stearing belt on first and it was on tighter than a very tight thing. It' took ages to get off and I've preety much rounded it now. I had to take the wheel and inner guard out to get to it. Just as I was about to give up, it came undone and the belt went on fine. Then I had to undo the one for the alternator. It's in the hardest place to get to and I just could not get it undone. The car started fine and I was able to drive it home, with dim lights. About half way home, the traction control light came on and stayed on so maybe this is what the wire is for that was hanging down. Anyway, I have a mobile mechanice coming out on Tuesday to fit the alternator belt and find where the wire has to go and what it's for. I hope it's ready for WSID the next day. Fingers crossed.
