need hellllp~ engine noise..
Car model: 95/96 FTO GPX, AUTO, NON-TURBO
My FTO runs good, but the noise comes all the times.
I just purchased this car for few days, and change the oil filter, engine oil
since I purchased this car, the engine oil is (20W - 50).
someone said that the lifter may too dirt and suggest me to change the oil
every 2 weeks for 3times, it may help to clean the engine and lifters.
Is anyone know how to fix the problem? or simplely some cheaper way to reduce the noise? may be some machinist charge low fees to fix that?
Please help, mail me o reply for any informations, thanks~

firstly dont use 20W50 oil.
A flush tends not to help with that issue much. Usually u need a good solvent like AutoRX which I have not seen used on this site beofre. You could try some addative, however if they are no adjusted (or out of adjustment) then they simpy need adjustment!!
this assumes you have a GPX of course.

dose the noise go away when you give it a rev or dose it just get faster?
if it gos away its just the injecters not lifters but if it gets faster with revs then you would be looking at lifters.
as for changing oil three times may help but never herd of it befor it will give it a clean out that part is true.

95% its your lifters/tappets...same thing essentially.Ralph_Shang wrote:thanks for reply everyone.
the noise go faster I think.
when I drive on high way like 70-80KMs, I can not hear any of the noise
(or may be too little), also when I stop at the traffic light, the noise also
goes little than normal, when I start rev the car, the noise simply goes
louder and quicker..
Try run with some cheap 5W30, run it on for 1000kms then see what the noise it like.
A common why to try an mask the noise is through thicker oil...however the FTO uses hydrolic lifers which require oil to get right up into them to pressureise them...in my experience a thinner oil works much better.
try it and see. I have also seen some results form decent oil filter tests and their resultant oil pressure chnage on the tappets. When you chnage it try and use a good filter (K&N) for example...you wont need to chnage this after 1000km. dont use the Ryco craa stuff

To some up;
A "tap tap tapping" noise is your tappets. Because you have a GPX, this is easily fixable, just take it to your mechanic & get them to adjust your tappets ... you can do it yourself, but not recommended unless you have a bit of mechanical experience. The "Grease Monkey" section on the www.ftooc.org forums has a decent guide on doing it I think..
Using a thicker oil will mask the noise somewhat, but it won't fix the problem, as for changing the oil 3 times in 2 week intervals, it can't hurt anything to do it, but you should be changing your oil at regular intervals anyway, every 5k or 10k at the most, so it shouldn't make much difference.

I suggest for the first flush use a cheaper oil as you only want it to be run in for say 1000km to see what happens. The filter is a K&N just order one from Supercheap I assume they can look in their catalogue, it has a hex nut on the top for easy insatll and removal...top stuffRalph_Shang wrote:THANKS~
Which brand of engine oil you may recommend?
and I went supercheap today and only saw one brand of oil filter(VO...do not remember the whole name of it)
where can I buy the good oil and filter in sydney area? thanks again.
as for a cheap oil, dunno. Just look for anything with xW30 in Repco/Supercheap. I know Mobil has one and you can get the Motul 4000 motion for under $50 for 5L.
If you dont wanna do another flush, buy your good oil off Harold from the following link. If I was you, I would choose the German Castrol (GC) product...top stuff and he is the only one selling it in Australia. Else just use Mobil1, Moutl 300V or Redline as they are all good oils.

changing the lifers is a bit of a pig. We have an expert down here in Vic thats does it for about 350 all up. However it takes time and thats what you are paying for, though 1k is lots!!Ralph_Shang wrote:the car workshop charge too much for the problem.. they said (more than $1000), is any know some private person can adjust the lifter for me?

hey, everyone!
I took my car to workshop today, and they check the car said this car is
self-adjusted by the oil pressure, so that someone suggest me to adjust
the tappets/lifters can not be done?
the man suggest me to do 3things, 1, change the oil and filter.
2. clean engine, something on the bottom of the engine?
3. change lifter....
what can I do now?
