Just wondering if anyone would have a fairly accurate idea of how much a V8 supercar mechanic would be paid. I don't want any ridiculous guesses though..
I don't have a f**king job, I'm a student and that's why I ask. I'm considering taking up a Diploma of Motorsport because I love cars and so I was wondering how much money I could expect to earn with those skills.
Get a life and don't speak unless you have something intelligent to say.
Is a diploma of motorsport limited to just v8 ? For an experienced v8 mechanic you can probably make around the 100k+ mark. But i would suspect as most mechanics, that the starting wages wouldnt be too high.

How pathetic... "More than you".

Perhaps you should consider a dual degree, coupling your Diploma of Motor Sports with a Diploma of 'Chill the f**k out and Take a Joke.'
Nah mate, it's not limited to V8, I was just using an example. It gives you the skills to be accepted into any race team. They claim that their graduates get into V8 supercars, Porsche Cup, Formula ford and even can go over to the USA and do NASCAR...

They could say that their graduates go to the moon if they want to, but it doesn't mean it's true .. they all make stupendous claims, like guaranteed to land you a job within the first 12 months etc etc, but they don't do anything about backing them up..
I would be posting on some Ford / Holden forums, or trying to talk to someone that works on the race cars (i.e. - call some workshops etc) to see if they actually hold the qualifications you get from that course in high regard, or what they look for when they're hiring a new mechanic .. AFAIK, experience is king ... you might be better off trying to start out with an apprenticeship at a good workshop, working on cars that you're interested in & try to get them to pay for your TAFE course instead of starting out in TAFE & then trying to get a job at the end..
Gotta do your trade (mechanic) then at the minimum Diploma of Mechanical Engineering. I did the mech eng course with a number of guys who were mechanics to start with, one went on to V8 Supercars & ended up as head mechanic (Skaifes 2001 HRT team win) - guy was earning $90k.

Be a doctor.
fairytale ending then
Mech Engineering doesnt really prepare you much for the automotove industry though. I believe some countries have BA degrees in Automotive Engineering.

They are just the words of a true idiot.
Sorry to offend so much. Apparently no one here has watched Gone in Sixty Seconds:
"What do you pay your pit crews with? Oreos and Gummy Bears?"
I got it, but its far more entertaining watching people who are too young to know about something go off the deep end before getting bitch slapped back to the surface of their own ignorance.
He coulda just asked what you meant by that...
This forum is about taking the piss, if someone can't take it perhaps they should go back to the world of warcraft forums! Seriously though, Dan, you need to lighten up a bit, most of what is said around here is in good fun. Some of these comments are very asshole-ish and unnecessary, but you are goading them on with "They are the words of a true idiot"
The Diploma of Motorsport is a 2 year course offered by the Southern Queensland Institute of TAFE at Warwick in Queensland. It's the only institute that offers the course in Queensland as far as I know.
@ Bennoz - In all modesty, I have the intelligence to be a doctor if I wanted, but I hate school and academic work. I would prefer to be doing something I have a real interest in and would take enjoyment out of, such as cars - but having said that, the money still needs to be right, and that's what I'm trying to inestigate.
@FTEvolution - Advice noted. Was having an extremely bad afternoon yesterday and am easily tempered. Fatal flaw, I know.
dont turn this into a bagging session-- obviously he didnt realise because when reading it i also thought it was out of left field n ive seen that movie... didnt remeber that line- but i like gummy's
i think that though you might be really good at cars n have agreat interest in them u gotta remeber a lot of other people do n its prolly not an industry that sees a huge turnaround n limited spaces to go into.
if you do go ahead with it, good luck, honestly. you can prolly call up the apprentureship line in your state n see if they have any details they can pass onto you

No piss taking in the next comment, but if you have the smarts to be a doctor, why bother with being a mechanic? IMO if you can do it, do mechanical engineering, then try to get into research and development. A1GP are always screaming out for engineers on their teams...
Think outside the box, the V8SC industry is pretty big, but it won't take you worldwide!!!
