help with torque converter

well my car kept entering limp mode, and eventually lost all drive after i went into reverse (was grinding noise, car wwouldnt engage gears properly, i would rev and it would stutter, and tranny fluid is a bit burnt after a brand new replace), so very likely my problem is the torque converter (possibly something slipping in the box aswel, but i would thing its the tc not engaging and also the innards of the tc grinding?. and now i can roll the car foward but pushing the car back in netural is stupidly hard, and when it all happened it was the other way around when loading on the trailer (takes 3 people to push foward and easy backwards). so i think its safe to say its the tc (opinions welcome aswel)

i have taken the tranny off, hell of a job, but i have the torque converter out,
now, the next step...what should i do? is there a way a transmission specialist (or myself even) can test the TC when its just the housing? im guessing not really, but would it be a waste of time taking it to someone?

and where do i get the new TC? i know i can get a 2nd hand one off one of you guys (post if you have a cheapy) but how much does a new one cost from a store/online store? and are they only fto specific? or does any torque converter fit (or atleast specific valued ones, eg, a 18inch 200toothed flywheel/TC).

crap sounds like TQ to me and I just dumped my old one last week after having wife on my back bout getting rid of old stuff

Pretty sure ive got a complete tip box down in the shed. Alternatively, I could probably get a new one ex Japan as well, but I hate to think how much theyd charge. Would be cheaper than buying locally, but im guessing it would still be expensive.

I reckon you are right with the diagnosis, just get a second hand one, I've had one in for a few years and it's fine.

ahk, nice, well last question (hopefully), will a 4speed tc fit into my 5speed (same number of splines going into it in both models?)?, im guessing it should, becasue the only differances between the 4 and 5speed are at the end of the "driveline process" so they wouldnt put it at the start of the drive of the motor/tranny. and also i just found a lot of sheer'ed metal parts inside the actual transmission, still sound like the torque converter or has anyone got anymore info on how it could be something else?

also, i found a guy that sells performance fto TC's in australia, asking $380, (im guessing that should include the welded on flywheel), and you choose your stall speed, its lightweight aswel. anyone bought one? i was about to but then thought il just fix it 1st (hopefully a 2nd hand tc i found for $90, unless someone here has a cheaper one) and then later on il upgrade, because the fto will benifit from it more than 95% of other cars (having a high rpm and llight body, and its ment for "mild" modifications (alternativly compared to a heavy duty or drag one). im guessint it will FREE UP 8-15 horses, and better take off and better shifts.

If your torque converter screwed up you will probably notice metal shavings in your clutch plates etc. This is why the FTO usually requires a full rebuild after the converter goes.
