any auto (and maybe manual, pref. auto) tranny

Post by millsy »

my diff has blown, so basically i need a new diff segment (not the drive clutches or reverse, think it may link straight onto the driveshafts), and i havent seen how extensive the rest of the damage is, but i might need a new sensor above the diff (ontop of the tranny, but the most rear tucked away sensor,) mine is damaged (but could still work, i will test).

so i need a whole box, so i can just take parts from it, or if you have it in pieces (which its only like 10 simple bolts to get into the innards and then just pull out the diff) then i will take just the diff.

reply back if you have anything with prices, the diff alone should be easy to post

not sure if sizes differ on different models, expecially with a lsd or no traction control, but i have a 5 speed gpvr, but i would probably prefer just a cheap diff so if it doesnt fit then its no big loss

thanks

pretty sure the 5sp is different, so you would need 5sp bits. Unfortunately, they are as rare as hens teeth, so chances arent high. If you need 4sp, I can help

And how on earth did you destroy just the diff? I've never heard or seen that happen in an FTO, they don't have the power to damage it.

Furthermore, the diff sits in the same casing as the gearbox, therefore if you've screwed the diff, then you've screwed the whole box. Shards of metal would have gone all the way through it.... It's time for a whole new box.

As Dwayne says, the 5 spd tips are rare, might be worth your while converting to manual.

no idea how the diff went, i think its the diff, the "planetary gear" or something, and whatever is inside it, and yes there was a lot of fine shards, like the size of their teeth, even one or 2 bits that are 4 teeth wide, iv examined and about to finish cleaning it, but it doesnt look like there is damage to anything else, i mean ofcourse there should be to some extent, but all bearings are fine, everything has no grinding while turning, and all teeth on everything look fine, think they just settled pretty well at the bottom, and when it stuffed up properly it was only after a minute of trying to move the car, well 30 secs, i mean i know thats all it takes, but everything does seem to be okay, cleaned out all the pump and i may need a new fluid filter (the internal one), but im fairly confident it will work fine, might need a new torque converter as u can never clean the insides of that well.
il take pics of it soon, giv u guys something to laugh at, ha

EDIT. its not the diff, its the DIRECT PLANETARY CARRIER and OVERDRIVE PLANETRY CARRIER. completely sheered the "planet" gears and the orbit gear, so i need that whole cluster, from what i can see i cant see why it would have changed from the 4speed tp the 5speed, so anyone got a spare or willing to seperate from their box? or can anyone *quickly* compare their carrier dimensions to mine? to see if they are the same. thanks guys

I think I've got a diff here somewhere (the planetary carriers form the central part of the diff)

Will be able to tell you tomorrow. You may need to change the final drive cog to the one off your old diff if it isn't buggered. The 4 & 5 speed boxes had different final drive ratios on the diffs.

i dont think it is the diff though, these carriers sit between the diff (as in the whole cluster, not sit in the diff) and the clutche's, i think one is for over drive, but its not the final ratio, the actual diff is. but as you take the lid/plate off the tip box, there is 3 "towers" of shafts/gears, its the middle one, it connects to the diff with its 3-4" (high) swirl gear. is that what you are talking about? i think i may be confusing myself here but its the middle cluster, sounds to me like you are talking about the lsd or simular (planetary gears that are within an inch of the driveshaft inputs). i am not talking about those
