You are better off going aftermarket from someone like jaycar. The stock ones tend to go eventually (are a weak point). An aftermarket set of actuators is not to much and are much more relaible

is there certain specifications it must adhere to for the FTO or is it fairly general?

Just get one of these, exactly the same one I used to fix my central locking problem. It isn't a direct replacement, it works off the existing wires, you just have to find a place to mount it in the door, and attach it to one of the rods that that move when you lock the car by hand.

It has worked flawlessly for years.

Here's the DIY. Handy for indentifying the wire colours.
Nothing wrong with rear door actuators either. The only difference is that one of the front door ones is considered 'the master' (5 wire) one 'the slave' (2 wire.) Neither of which is important because you don't utilise the 2 way switch in the master, you use the FTO in car one.
