EPA Notice!....for noise

Post by BJ »

Hows it going everyone? Today i got in the mail for the first time ever, an EPA notice saying i need to get it tested for noise or i could face a huge fine. Just wanted to know if anyone got an EPA notice before & what did they do if they failed the test. I heard that the tester will ask you to rev your car to like 3000-4000 RPM & measure the DB from half a metre from your exhaust tip. Also I heard that if i failed, i have to change my exhaust system, which will cost more money.....which i dont have since im going to overseas in a month. Thanks for your input.

ok so i got done for noise but i didnt get the chance to change out my exhaust as the coppers made me go to RTA on the spot and get car checked over pits then noise tested by EPA, they revved my car to about 6,000 rpms and my car registered 110 decibels. The legal limit aus wide is 89 decibels so i got hit with a 500 dollar fine and had to get it modified. I then put stock exhaust on the rear third of the car and stuffed chicken wire in the middle third but still only tested 100 decibels......so i failed the second time and wasted 60 bucks testing fee. I then had to get 2 hotdog mufflers installed and then only just made it with my stock rear third exhaust and 2 hotdog mufflers in the middle....i passed the test and have only just gotten 1 of the long hotdog mufflers taken out of the middle and put my sports quad tip exhaust back on the back of my exhaust.
I still have the stock tip and muffler that i borrowed if you are close to syd and wanted to borrow it to, provided i get the ok with bushido.

Anything else you would like to know?

Hang on, did you get pulled over, or did you just get something in the mail. And if in the mail, why did they choose you. I would have though it a bit unfair if they are targetting certain categories outside of registration periods. Being pulled over, fair enough, but through the mail.......

Try ebay'ing a "silencer." should be quiet enough for what they're testing, when the car is free revving, but give you a nice note under load.

Exhaust I have installed is extractors back to a stainless steel fujitsubu gieken muffler and dual tips. Has a very mild note when free revving, actually sounds a bit gutless and wussy but as soon as it's under load it shines and high rpm is screams an awesome note.

yeah it was on the spot as they tested my car.
Yours will be fine if you get your car under 90 decibels before you get it tested. just get stock middle and end put on or you will fail
