I have just seen a news story on channel 7, a major street racing accident including a FTO and a Statesman.

A lot of fatal car accidents involved in crashing into tree or pole. It's deadly when all the impact concentrated onto a small vertical cross-section.
What's the likelihood/probability of hitting pole/tree when losing control?
It seems like cars that lost control tend to steer towards pole/tree.

7 times out of ten you hit a tree/pole because you are looking at it, your body automatically reacts and points/ directs the car that way.

Ah beat me to it Aza, was gonna say the same thing - but yea worst thing that you can do (which is what most people do) is look at what you dont want to crash into, reason stated above, keep looking at where you want the car to go.
I believe they teach this and various other very very useful tips and tricks at defensive driving courses? Another reason why it should be a manditory class before you get your P's (and probably every couple of years to refresh)

Natural selection.

Saying that, my condolences to the family that have to deal the aftermath.

Was it wet during the race? I mean it's pretty f*cken hard to lose it in an FTO.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
