gearbox issues

Post by Lawso »

require some help with a list of stuff that i should do in the short term.

basically, the gearbox is making noise, so thats coming out for a bearing kit, will do clutch at the same time, tappets are noisy as hell. they're getting after market ones.

while everything is out, the plenum is off etc etc, what else should i be doing for future proofing this engine. sparks, leads, coil pack?

also, is it wise to bore the 6a12 non mivec. :geny: search button. if so to how much more displacement is safe, but would get a little bit more torque

any help would be muchly appreciated :D

dont worry about the coilpacks, just do the plugs and maybe give the intake manifold a good clean, also will make it easy to change the fuel filter but not much.

give the stepper a clean as well.

Also check if your rack boots and cv boots are split, maybe get those while your clutch is out if they are.

You could also swap the outer cv's to the opposite sides to get a bit more life out of them.

If you have the plenum off and the gearbox out you could put a deckchair in there and really relax while you do the fuel filter!

Do the crank shaft oil seal at the gearbox end while you have the chance as well.

Don't bother with all the service sh*t like plugs & leads, even the tappets I'd leave alone for the time being, you can do that at any time. You'll end up biting off more than you can chew.

You're doing drivetrain stuff, so just stick to drive train stuff. I'd do crank main seal, cv joints seeing as the shafts will be out, steering rack boots if they're needed, I'd chuck new clutch slave cylinder on and fuel filter purely because its easy to get at.

Your reco kit for the box will cost you $250 landed, a decent clutch will be around the $400 mark, machining the flywheel to match the clutch around the $60 mark give or take, CV's about $80 for the pair, slave about $40 bucks, gearbox oil $30, steering rack boots $30 for the pair. So there's $890 bucks without labour...

Oh & had you planned on booking in the gearbox reco with me?

It'll take me about a week to turn it around & you're currently 2nd in the queue behind Haltech Manual-conversion.

wasn't planning on asking, but beer and cash would be yours mate. would kind of want to do the tappets, just because all this work would be done at the time, may as well, unless its really not recommended. coz f**k, who am i kidding, you are THE fto pro...more so than mitsi.

since the car is going to be out of rego for a while, i'll grab hair-do and get the box and cv's out at mine. i can't leave my car at yours again. never again

work shall not commence until i have a solid job again, so i've got time. getting the blue slip today, am expecting the brakes to be requiring attention, and heres to hoping its only pads

A pink slip is still only valid for 2 weeks!

If you're thinking '3 months' for some reason, that's the amount of time you have to re-register the car after the rego expires, with a pink slip. After 3 months you need the blue slip.

A pink slip is actually valid for 42 days, not two weeks.

I have one idea what you can do with the gearbox removed!

Replace the headlight...
