Only problem with the TJ magna V6 is the big end's don't like being revved hard. We've found this out by destroying the big-end bearings in 2 motors in the race buggy so far. If you want one to go hard, get an earlier (pre-2000) 6G74 and use that. Alternatively, the 6G75 uses the same block as the 74 with slightly different heads (all internal though, same external sizes), so will also bolt-up using said conversion kit.
6A12TT won't fit Taz.
And you forgot the 6G72 DOHC MIVEC which is a good option in my opinion.
Also the 6G75 is a great option. It's fitted into a Lancer Coupe with very slight modifications (exhaust etc) and does an 11 second quarter mile.
There's another Lancer Coupe with a 6G75 with the 6G72 DOHC MIVEC heads on it.
And since engine bays are the same, whatever fits into a Lancer/Mirage fits into an FTO as well

You don't need the 72 mivec heads for the 75, the NP/NS/NT pajero has a mivec 6G75 from factory
it WAS 20% wasnt it (but from a previous argument already had thats confusing. Its 20% counted from the new engine - not the old. This means 2500cc, not 2400cc)
Surely they wont lift that to 75-80% ?
There are other rules also now, however given the FTO only ever came out with a 1.8 or 2L, there's no way a 3L or for that matter 3.5 will ever pass as a roadworthy piece.

The 6G75 MIVEC is a SOHC MIVEC with economy in mind whereas the 6G72 MIVEC is a DOHC MIVEC with 2 cam profiles. Completely different
As for legality, in ACT/NSW it'd be legal so long as it's engineered, not sure about elsewhere in Australia though
Yeah 6G75 fits and would make for a very fast FTO.
The reason it's not done is mostly because people who own FTOs generally do not spend a great deal of money on the engine and the ones that do go for an easier approach, of which there are many
