Hi all,

Just drove FTO 1,000kms on Saturday and on the way there I was having an amazing time, but int he way back it was crap.

The reason why is my clutch burnt. I accelerate revs go up and then speed follows a few seconds after once it's had the time to slip a bit.

I just want to know does the clutch pedal adjustment have anything to do or affect the clutch wear on these cars? My pedal has pretty much no free play and I can shift perfectly fine pushing the clutch in 1 - 2 cms - very good for smooth fast shifting.

When I went for a drive yesterday it doesn't seem to slip as much - still nothing compared to the bite of my friend's new FTO, is this fluid related as well?

If I do need to get a new clutch does everyone agree that the Exedy Heavy Duty are the best? (http://www.exedy.com.au/clutch-finder-nz)

I have that on GTO and it is nice.

A friend's GPvR has what I'm pretty sure is an Exedy HD, Very nice once you get used to it...

Sounds like clutch plate worn.

No point really going heavy duty unless you plan on making a decent amount more power, but for the price difference you may as well.

I've adjusted the push rod on the clutch pedal and it seemed to have fixed it. The bite point is now closer to the middle.

But I cant get any damn free play on the pedal WTF!?

My pedal is also incredibly stiff.

Go the Excedy HD. Bit more bite, but without the heavy pedal.

Thanks for recommendation Bennoz, I am shopping around for parts now, I was quoted $399 so far for the HD kit.

Anything else I should get done while the gearbox is out? Machine flywheel perhaps? Or should be fine just a direct swap at my trusted general mechanic? Gearbox specialist charges a fortune.

You'll definitely want to have the flywheel machined.

^^^ Yep, flywheel machine for sure. The kit comes with a new throw out bearing, so you don't have to worry about that.

I would also change the input shaft seal on the box. It's usually a culprit for leaking out the bottom & being diagnosed as a rear main seal leak - MD741818

I'd also do the rear main seal as a matter of course - MD359158

If you don't want to pay Mitsubishi prices for the seals, go see a bearing guy. They're generic type seals.

Will do that, how much labour time should I put aside for clutch change and fly wheel machining? I'm going to shop around.

My clutch is totally toast, adjusting the master cylinder push rod did jack

And I was showing a friend who wanted to get an FTO how awesome it is but it didn't pull at all.

He did get a massive adrenaline rush with how awesome it handled

Also just like to confirm,

When I drove it cold it was fine but then after a few accelerations to 8k RPM it started slipping all over the place. Why is this?

Probably because it's worn the clutch plate down to the rivets, they bite when cold, not when warm... especially when revved hard. You could be doing your flywheel some serious damage.

Last one I had done was $50 bucks, took 30mins to machine.

Yes once clutch starts to sh*t itself stop driving it.. could end up needing new flywheel. Which is a good excuse to go with a lightweight one.. but meh!

Anyway, as Ben said. Replace all the things you can while there to save yourself the headache if something that you could've replaced as precautionary method sh*ts itself.

Hahah right, which companies make light weight flywheels? Whats the most recommended one? Lightweight flywheels won't carry as much inetria so wont top end acceleration suffer?

Alright it looks like I'll be driving the GTO around for now.

Do you guys thing that this was caused by a mis adjusted clutch pedal?

Hahahahahhaha this is my exact excuse for buying new things for the car... I COULD get a wheel alignment or can get better tyres sooner

Basically it will make it dislike hills and stuff, but the less weight that the engine has to push around, the better. Although will generally rev harder.

Fidanza does one and so does Exedy. I was looking into them but couldn't budget one into my build and am not sure if anyone else has one.

Yea that was one of my concerns, i was going to get one for the GTO but then I thought it might mess with the smoothness of everything.

For these two seals what additional work is required? And roughly additional labor?

I thought about getting a light weight flywheel as well, then I remembered I live in a really hilly country
