Exhaust - twin outlet setup question

I've been thinking about getting a twin outlet setup for my car as I was looking at it this way - most high-performance N/A 6 cylinders have a twin setup so why shouldn't my FTO be setup the same?

so.... has anybody here done a twin setup? not split from the muffler into 2 pipes but an actual proper setup. what's the recommended pipe size? would it still be 2.5"? would it be split after the cat?

I was thinking of having twin tips on each end so it would look something like this. Thought it would give it a different more euro type look:

Also curious to know what it would look like with those DTM look up-pipes too...

Anybody good with photoshop?

Actually, this is something I too am interested in as it really does give the car classier look as opposed to the massive chrome tips that are attached to most name brand exhausts.

I guess a problem with the FTO is that the exhaust runs up the left hand side of the car and then banks to the right before turning towards the rear of the car.

If you were to run a split setup from the cat you'd have to find somewhere to run the second pipe too otherwise it'd be running parralel to the current piping. If you do it from the muffler, the gasses will always choose the quickest way out, which would most likely be the to left.

It's definately doable, but whether or not it really adds any advantages apart from looks hasn't really been discussed.

Kazbah has it, maybe we should get her to crawl under her car with a camera!

EDIT: Plus you'd have to cut and respray your rear bar to allow for the second set of tips to fit properly.

I wonder what it would look like with twin tips coming out of the central part of the car??

I am very interested in this setup as well,
I have made the repair shop to cut a second hole in the bumper to accommodate the second set of pipes
Although I don't care if I have a true 2 muffler setup or both pipes coming out of 1 muffler.
Cost analysis will be great.

BTW, I have seen that DTM look up-pipes on an integra with dual set setup, I reckon it looked very bad.
Not to my taste.

If you have the VS rear bar there are twin sections cut out, so im thinking of doing the same thing but probably just have one pipe coming from the cat into two pipes spliting to either sides .... Would there be more restriction doing it that way ??

hmmm still would be interested in seeing what the DTM tips would look like. help Kaveman!

I think the Y-Pipe suggestion after the cat is the way to go. Kaz, are you able to take pics of underneath your car

?

I don't think it would cause a restriction with the Y-Pipe because if it's smoothed out on the inside it should flow pretty much equally through both sections. What I'm worried is the size of the piping from the Y-Pipe onwards. Should it be 2.5" each side or smaller? coz if you think about it this way, you've got 2x2.5" pipes from the catback, it would really equate to a 3.5" cross sectioned pipe... right? So... Imagine having a 3.5" catback system.... yeah that's my dilemma. I'd do it but not sure if I'll lose power.

As for the rear bar, how much would it cose to put another cut out and respray?

anyway, MADFTO runs an aftermarket MR2 drum/exhaust on his GPvR, & it look very good.

Maybe we can do a group buy

But would there be any loss in power ? Although i only have a after market muffler x force N1 .... the cat and piping is stock.

Apparently he couldn't find any different, & he got the extractor/cat back setup as well.

To be honest, couple of kw VS the look, i rather have the look, as I doubt 0.01sec different is going to hurt

Btw have you highflow your cat yet barfy?

hey guys, apparently the XR6T cat converter is a single 3" inlet and 2.25" DUAL outlet cat! hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm..... this could be the solution to a proper twin exhaust setup.

the MR2 aftermarket muffler option sounds good too. anybody got pics of these aftermarket mufflers?

Gonna be a bit odd joining a 2.25" downpipe from the motor to a 3" opening on the cat

Even the RPW pipes are only a 2.5" into the cat....

I've also after that type of look especially with a VS kit on the rear. I have seen a type of setup that had the twin pipe on either side and from what I saw they actually moved the muffler further to the left and closer to the front and custom piping 2 pipes straight and the other 2 to the other side.

I 'believe' to do it properly you'd need to run a pipe from each bank seperately from the front to the rear but put a balancer pipe in between the two at some point.You'd need two cats to do it this way though.

I'm not sure what it would do for performance,but i think you'd get a nice v6 burble from it

Agreed, there's no point having 2 into 1 then 1 into 2 again. One pipe from each bank, 2 cats, dunno what you'd do with lambda sensors (aftermarket engine management to control 2 of them?) then squeezing 2 pipes down a tunnel designed for 1, 2 mufflers, then out your nice custom rear bar....

Big coin, minimal gain. Look hot thou...

Best bet is splitting after the muffler when the work is already done.

BTW it wouldnt be necessary to take the car to a panel shop to get the bar cut for the twin pipes. It can be done at home if your game. Draw up a template of the cutout. Mark the bar and cut with a jigsaw, angle grinder or use tin snips if you dont have either, then using a drill with a grinding stone attached and smooth off the cutout. Just take it easy with the smoothing to preserve the paintwork...

Bennoz, yeah it's going to be a little odd trying to join a 2.5" to a 3", but I'm sure the pipe can be enlarged at the end to fit.

what does the MR2 type aftermarket exhaust look like?

I considered the setup in those photos but how do you get twin ports per side? The other side of the muffler would only be strictly for show in the gas flow sense.
