I noticed when I started the car today, in idle while I was leaving my engine oil to warm up it showed the battery at about 10V, and the second I started driving it was back to normal at a healthy reading and stayed there whenever I stopped at the lights etc.

I'm guessing this has something got to do with the cold weather? as it stayed normal once I started driving

I guarentee you that if you havn't recently fitted aftermarket dials then something has gone very awry.

If you've got a multimeter test the voltage drop across the +ve and -ve terminals with the car off, with all accesories turned on, at idle, and then at idle with all accesories turned on.

Chances are your battery's about to cark it (which wouldn't be to bad, cheap) or something more expensive is on it's way out.

While the car is started it should not, ever, sit to far below 12v.

hopefully its just the battery then

I noticed once before when I was driving, with the air con on, once I stopped at a traffic light, on idle the battery kept going to 12, then back up, until i started moving.. and the needle would keep moving back and forth slowly when I stopped again

checking the battery under no load wont prove much...but if its low under no load I doubt it would even start.

test it with the car running and see whats going on. Mine drops a bit also at the lights I notice...I suspect the alternator...just rev it a bit and see what happens...I mean only up like 200rpm.

Maybe i should get my battery changed.. rather that than having it just die out when I'm out somewhere.

NRMA membership is $50 a year... this is the kinda thing you'd have diagnosed in 10 minutes & a new battery (if thats the issue) for $100... delivered & fitted at your front door

Haha, roadside assistance is pretty much the same for all ages Ranges from like 45 to 95 depending on the type of cover you're after.

Mines been pretty useless though... having said that, it's not a lot to pay to have your ass covered in the event of a major breakdown half way between sydney and the top of queensland however.

Im 18 and i got NRMA road assistance i only paid like $100+ for a whole yr. and yeah i get that too sublime when i put it on idle its like below 10V scary lol

no 200...just a slight increase in throttle...see if it restores.

Ahh .. I figured you were saying to rev it TO 200rpm which wouldn't really make sense. I know what you mean now.

hey guys..i just reconditioned my alternator 2 mths ago and replaced a brand new battery with RACQ but there are a few things i spotted on my battery gauge.

1) After the first turn of key, the needle will go pass 12V
2) After the engine is on, it almost reached 16V
3) However, when the car is running, the needle drops back to 14V region

Any bro experienced this problem as well?
