Increasing engine capacity?

Post by sublime19 »

I'm curious if there's anybody that's increased engine capacity for their FTO by boring the size of the cylinder holes bigger?
Wouldn't this have a dramatical increase in performance (not as much in the FTO as it would in other cars i spose??)

So is it simply not worth it for the amount of money it would cost doing this to an FTO engine? I was thinking about the people that spent a fortune on twin turbo's, people who go all out surely would have considered this, and if not then is there any particular why?

same goes for compression ratio, increasing this (obviously not too much)?

I'm guessing it wouldn't be cheap to do.. I just wanted to know what kind of increases you'd get with these mods

you could try putting in a 6a13, and go straight to 2.5 litres, do you have a mivec or non-mivec, I have heard that the non mivec 6a12 engine harness will plug straight on the 6a13 and all you have to do is swap the ECU around, also swap the non-mivec 6a12 cams on the 6a13 because I've heard the non-mivec cam profile is more agressive than the 6a13.

here is one that has been done, a non turbo 6a13 in a FTO, being a non-turbo basically no modifications has to be done to put this engine in http://www.kempys.co.nz/ftovk.htm.

they had a kit that rpw develop before
but i dont think its on sale anymore
they had a 6a13 bottom end i think
so it became 2.5L

6a12 2.0 L DOHC (Mitsubishi FTO)
Bore - 78.4 mm
Compression ratio - 10.0:1
Peak power (1994-1996) - 127 kW (172 PS) @ 7000 rpm
Peak power (1997-2002) - 132 kW (180 PS) @ 7000 rpm
Peak torque - 191 N·m (141 ft·lbf) @ 4000 rpm

6a13 2.5 L SOHC
Bore - 81.0 mm
Compression ratio - 9.5:1
Peak power - 121 kW (165 PS) @ 5750 rpm
Peak torque - 223 N·m (164 ft·lbf) @ 4500 rpm

The torque figure is definately appealing
I have a GR so non mivec, the Bore is 81mm as opposed to 78.4 in 6a12

Instead of buying a 6a13, why can't the cylinders just be bored out more?
I'm sure this will be a cheaper option with a similar torque output

by the time you buy all the internals to match the new bore it would just about have to be cheaper to drop in a 6a13tt

You might not be able to bore the 6a12 block to 2.5 litres, you will get a better power figure if you put the GR cams in, also if you just put the GR heads on the 6a13 you will increase the compression ratio as well, I have no idea how much but you should get more power than the non-mivec 6a12.

Sorry, I didn't read all the threads or the original post
But thought I would add some info

The bore of the 6A13 and 4G9 series engines is the same.
So, and I was looking into this but disregarded it when rebuilding my engine, use the 1.6 MIVEC pistons in the engine
They are designed for 8000+ rpm as is

I didn't go ahead with it because if something went wrong, no cash to fix it

And from my calculations it would only be like a 2150cc or so (big 2.1 litre, but not quite there to be a 2.2)

It might be easy to do it yourself, it might be as easy as just swapping the 6a12 heads onto the 6a13, I've haven't seen it been done yet but have heard of it.

with nissan with their engines you can mix things up like a RB20 with a RB26 crank will make it a RB24, RB25 head on a RB30 block, probably can do the same with the 6a12 and 6a13.

From talking to Dave about this 6A13 with MIVEC heads, you need parts from 3 different engines
6A13 twin cam block, 6A12 heads, 6A13 single cam parts as well, and custom pistons rods

I'm not sure but maybe like pumps or something?
Really not sure though
I mean, at the same time I am sure RPW would not want to give too much info out
