WTB: Mivec Engine
Hi,
Well... my first post here, so, hi all!
The engine in my GPX blew today... and... well... I need another :/
Does anyone have one to sell, or the best way to source one?
Cheers,
Matt

Haha... does seem a bit outrageous.
I found this

There is a whole car for sale in Melbourne for $500. Id snap that up as its cheaper than an engine will cost.

Ah! Hrm. Well... I'm not super concerned with keeping it mivec, she rarely even breaks 3000rpm these days.Taz

That's not a mivec engine..
Could I put that in or would there be ECU issues?
Ah... not that one at Smithfield looks very promising... he reckons it's mechanically OK, so I wonder if makeshit panel beating and some duct tape would get it an hour north.....

Re: WTB: Mivec Engine
You need to change over your ECU and wiring loom to do a non-mivec to mivec conversion so me thinks it's the same the other way around..
i.e. changing your MAP sensor to a MAF sensor. I guess you could modify the wiring but it would be much easier to just change the ECU and loom.

Ah, cheers Daniel2019. Too bad these things don't just come with a USB port and a mobile phone CPU + firmware eh?You need to change over your ECU and wiring loom to do a non-mivec to mivec conversion so me thinks it's the same the other way around..

To be fair though, changing over wiring while the engine is out is pretty easy. The ECU literally is just a few bolts in the passenger side footwell to take out/put in and the hardest part is fitting the looms through the grommet in the firewall while getting the old one out and the new one in.
I'm currently doing a non-mivec to mivec but I wouldnt be going from mivec to non-mivec. Best just to source a mivec engine and be done with it.

But if it was me I would fix the engine I had so I would have matching numbers still.
You say your engine blew, in what way?

This definitely seem to be the case.Best just to source a mivec engine and be done with it.
Well... because my mechanic tells me so lol. I wasn't all that... confident in his diagnosis though to be fair. Partly because they offered to buy it from me as a project car, partly because.. what he said was, all they did was flush the fluids and it was still making a nasty tapping noise. How do you know the engine is blown
The tapping noise is constant and matches the RPM (ie, increases with increased revs regardless of speed). He suggested that the (crank shaft?) was slightly out of alignment, possibly due to a bearing or bearings doing something they shouldn't, and because the tolerances are so low, there's metal tapping metal. I'm not much of a mechanic so... it sounded plausible enough to me, which isn't saying much lol.

Re: WTB: Mivec Engine
Sounds to me like you just need to adjust your tappets. I wouldn't be going back to that mechanic..
After running an engine for long enough without adjusting them, they get out of measurement and your camshaft lobes don't connect to open up the valve properly and it every so slightly alters the timing of the engine. Just take off your intake manifold and rocker covers and you can adjust them from there.
DIY is here http://ftoaustralia.com/v3/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7582
If you dont know what you're doing, I'm sure a forum member can help out. Where abouts are you located?
Edit: Either that or you have a big end bearing problem, but I dont know a lot about that. Sounds to me like it's just tappets.

Re: WTB: Mivec Engine
Video the noise.
Consistent rpm tapping with these engines is as Daniel said, tappets.
This isn't an early 4G63 motor.

Re: WTB: Mivec Engine
Sounds like tappet noise to me.
Vectose, @ Newcastle, just made a tappet adjustment tool maybe he could help you seeming though you are on the Central Coast anyway.
I would have helped you do it but I have just moved from the Coast to SA.
...and yeah your mechanic sounds like a fool.
