in the process of changing the rear gasket. dont need help as of yet, but probably will at some stage lol
doing the gasket first- noticed its really dirty under the cover, mainly on the left side. gave it abit of a clean with just a rag but i want to know if theres a better way to cleAn it up with out damaging something? also im changing the oil and putting on a new sump after ive done this, so would it be safe to degrease and scrub all the gunk (photos) off with it all flushing out with the old oil when i do the change? or just no!
and these bolts are from the throttle body. why is only one of them covered in a white corrosive looking powder , mean anything?

Just a bit of oxidation, nothing to worry about.

That oil gunk though is disgusting. Indicative of a poor service history before you.

I'd be giving that full on diesel flush mate, a rag wont cure that.

Ok thought so..
But the question mainly is, will anything that I put through there to clean it, fall straight thru and come out when I drop the sump out? Including the bits of oil build up and sh*t? And is degreaser safe to use? And of course after doing this I'd run a litre of clean oil all thru it before putting the sump back on and filling up.

That's what diesel oil flush is for mate, as Ben said. We did it on a Land Cruiser at work that had oil like mud (literally) and hadn't had new oil in 50,000ks

I don't have that though? And I need to put the gasket back on tonight. I just want to no is it safe to degrease? If its not then I just have to leave it as is..

I wouldn't degrease it. My guess is that it wouldnt be safe and you couldn't guarantee you'd get all the degreaser out again, but I could be wrong.

You do the flush just like you would an oil change. You pour it into your old oil, run it for a bit/drive around in the low rev range then dump it out and pour in new oil.

In this case, I'd be doing it twice.
Get some cheap oil after the first flush is done, and run more cleaner through.
Dump it, then put in the good oil!

A bit unnecessary, but ehh...

Or you could do oil changes more frequently and run a flush through each time, like every 3000km's.

Ok I see. So I can do the gasket and put everything back on. Then before I put in the new $80 thing of oil flush it with dielsel, then again maybe with a cheap oil. Then fill with the good stuff?

I've changed oil and filter EVERY 8000 - 10 000kms and have never used anything other then this v

I've got 5 bottles of that on the shelf. Stocked up when they were on sale for $40 at Super Cheap.

The back spark plugs. Quite dirty... I remember seeing someone post a spark plug chart with pictures showing what means what.. Does anyone have this?

Wow can't believe it took like all day to get this done.
Back together now, and holy F#%K ! The noticeable difference in power, sound and smoothness is incredible. What was wrong with the car before? Possibly not running on all the spark plugs or something? They haven't been changed since the week I bought the car. Like 9 months or so ago. But still, the difference is crazy.

Can't wait to throw in the new sump and some fresh oil tomoro. Also doing the transmission oil and filter aswell.

Went to do the oil this morning. And I found this ! Wtf
There was no sign of any water before I did the gasket and plugs last night. Then I took it for a drive for about 10mins. And this is the result.

I'm guessing its water left in the rocker cover after I decreased it and scrubbed then hosed the shift out of it. Possibly could of held water somewhere that I didn't notice ? Does this sound most probable ?

Or could I have put a hose back on the wrong connection when reconnecting the manifold.

and is it likely to do damage to the engine if it was just abit of water left in there from cleaning out?
